IMPROVEMENT OF WATER SUPPLY FROM NATURA 2000 SITE

Strathspey & Badenoch Water Supply Improvements

Application of the IEIA process for the selection and assessment of a water abstraction scheme in the heart of the Cairngorms, one of the most highly protected areas in Britain. This is a possible precedence case in terms of the application of the NATURA 2000 legislation in Scotland. Close collaboration is being carried out with statutory stakeholders such as The Scottish Executive, SNH, SEPA, the Spey Fisheries Board et al.

Project elements include IEIA and stakeholder management including a public consultation programme. Work is in progress at present and new details will be published via this website.

PROJECT ZERO

Integrated waste management, minimisation, recycling and educational programme under the provisions for landfill tax *.
The proposal deals with an integrated research and educational programme that explores the way ahead for the waste management industry by mapping out business opportunities and providing the necessary market knowledge for their exploitation. It also draws upon the information and knowledge enerated to provide training and educational materials in waste management for the education of future staff in the industry and among those it will have to deal with among its clients and regulators.

The project has multiple aspects and requires a range of specialist skills for its completion. An integrated core team of practitioners, each experienced in his or her specialist field, has therefore been drawn together including a project manager, waste management engineers, an educationalist, an economist and an environmental specialist. These individuals and companies have all been drawn from established businesses or institutions who have been working together on a range of projects in the past.

* This programme was proposed in 1999 (as a much delayed follow-up of the ground-breaking Highland Waste Study by Sir William Halcrow & Partners, Inverness 1991/92) - but could not be implemented due to the detailed rulings of the Landfill Tax regime. This situation is particularly revealing given the continuing lack of the application of waste management policies in Scotland.
